What are warts and how can they be treated?
What are warts?
Wart usually appears as a small growth on the skin that may look like a solid blister or a small cauliflower, oftentimes relatively small, hardened lumps that are round and elevated from the skin.
What causes warts?
HPV needs an entry point, it could enter through cracks in dry skin, through cuts, scrapes or through softened skin. It then causes the cells in the skin to multiply very quickly at a certain point, forming a lump of skin.
While the lesions usually spread through contact with others, not everyone who is exposed to HPV will develop them. If the virus spreads from the first area of infection, more warts may appear.
If you are unsure with any lesions on your skin, please speak to our nurses at Cosmetic Medical Clinic.
How are warts treated?
Common methods have traditionally involved freezing or topical treatment of the wart, however laser is becoming increasingly popular for its efficient treatment and effective results.
Types of warts that we treat:
- Periungual warts – More irregular than other kinds, usually affecting the edges of fingernails and toenails. They can also develop under the nails.
- Flat warts – These most commonly appear on the face and neck and have a thin and thread-like appearance. Flat warts are a type that can appear on the face, neck, chest, knees, hands, wrists or forearms. They are formed in clusters of up to several hundred tiny lumps at a time.
- Plantar warts – Located on the soles of the feet, these often have black dots which are clotted blood vessels. Mosaic warts can be formed when there are clusters of plantar warts, which can be painful.
